Installing Office 2016 Standard

This guide walks you through downloading, installing and activating Microsoft Office 2016 Standard on Windows. You received your 25-character licence key by email after your purchase, so keep it to hand.

System requirements

Office 2016 Standard runs on the following systems:

• Operating system: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or Windows 11
• Processor: 1 GHz or faster (32-bit or 64-bit)
• Memory: at least 2 GB of RAM
• Hard disk: 3 GB of free space
• Display: resolution of 1280 × 800 or higher
• Internet connection for download and activation

Important: Only one Office generation can be installed on a computer at a time. Office 2016 cannot run alongside Office 2019, 2021 or Microsoft 365.

1. Preparation: Remove any existing Office

Many new PCs come with a Microsoft 365 trial preinstalled. This must be removed before installation, otherwise the setup will fail or the later activation will not work.

1. Open Settings > Apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features).
2. Look for entries such as "Microsoft 365" or "Microsoft Office" (trial versions).
3. Uninstall these entries and then restart your PC.

2. Download Office 2016 Standard

1. Open our download page.
2. Select Office 2016 Standard (Windows) there.
3. Download the complete installation file, for example to the Downloads folder.

Tip: If you receive an ISO file, simply double-click it on Windows 10/11. Windows mounts it as a virtual drive. There is no need to burn it to DVD.

3. Run the installation

1. Double-click the downloaded setup file to start it. With an ISO file, open the mounted drive and start setup.exe from there.
2. Confirm the User Account Control prompt with Yes.
3. The setup installs the Office 2016 Standard applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher) automatically.
4. Wait until the completion message appears, then close the window. Keep your PC switched on during the installation.

4. Activate with the licence key

Make sure you have an internet connection and open the email containing your licence key.

1. Open an Office application, for example Word.
2. If an activation window appears straight away, enter the key there. Otherwise, click File > Account > Change Product Key.
3. Enter the 25-character product key and confirm with Next.
4. Office checks the key online and unlocks the licence. Under File > Account it will then say "Product Activated".

Note on phone activation: Office 2016 Standard comes from the volume licensing programme. If online activation is not offered or is rejected, select the option "I want to activate the software by telephone" in the Activation Wizard. This is an automated Microsoft system. You do not have a conversation; instead you enter the displayed installation ID using your phone keypad and receive a confirmation ID in return. Common problems

• "The product key is invalid": Check for typos. Common mix-ups are 'Q' and '0' or 'B' and '8'. Ideally, copy the key directly from the email.
• Setup fails: Usually an old Office or Microsoft 365 trial version is still installed. Uninstall it completely (see step 1), restart your PC and try again.
• Online activation fails: Use phone activation via the automated Microsoft system (see the note above). Your key remains fully valid.
• Wrong edition installed: An Office 2016 Standard key will not activate a Professional Plus installation. Only use the installer from our download page.
