Installing and activating Office 2016 Professional Plus

This guide takes you step by step through downloading, installing and activating Microsoft Office 2016 Professional Plus on Windows. You received your 25-character product key by email after your purchase, so keep it to hand.

System requirements

Before installing, check that your computer meets the following requirements:

• Operating system: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or Windows 11
• Processor: at least 1 GHz (32-bit or 64-bit)
• Memory: 2 GB of RAM
• Hard disk: 3 GB of free space
• Display: resolution of at least 1280 × 800 pixels
• Internet: connection for download and online activation

Note: Office 2016 Professional Plus is a Windows-only version. For macOS you need a separate Office for Mac product.

1. Preparation: Remove any existing Office

Many new PCs come with a Microsoft 365 trial or an older Office version preinstalled. Remove this first, as two Office versions installed side by side can interfere with each other and block activation.

1. Open Settings > Apps (or the classic Control Panel > Programs and Features).
2. Look for entries such as "Microsoft 365" or "Microsoft Office" in the list.
3. Click Uninstall and follow the instructions.
4. Then restart your computer.

2. Download Office 2016

Download the offline installer for Office 2016 Professional Plus from our download page: Go to the Keywi24 downloads.

1. Open the download page and select Office 2016 Professional Plus.
2. Download the installation file and save it, for example, in the Downloads folder.
3. If the file is an ISO image, a double-click is all you need on Windows 10 and 11. Windows mounts the image automatically as a virtual drive.

3. Run the installation

1. Double-click the setup.exe file to start it.
2. Confirm the User Account Control prompt with Yes.
3. The installation runs automatically and takes around 10 to 20 minutes depending on your system.
4. Wait until the completion message appears, then close the setup window.

Tip: Close all running programs before you start, and do not cancel the installation before it has finished.

4. Activation with the product key

After installation, activate Office directly in one of the applications. Make sure you have an internet connection.

1. Open a program such as Word or Excel.
2. On first launch, Office asks for the product key. If no prompt appears, click File > Account > Change Product Key.
3. Enter the 25-character product key from your Keywi24 email.
4. Click Activate. Office checks the key online and unlocks the licence.
5. Under File > Account it will then say "Product Activated".

Phone activation: With some keys (volume licences), Office requires activation by phone. This is normal: you call an automated Microsoft system, enter the displayed installation ID using your phone keypad and receive a confirmation ID in return. You do not need to speak to anyone. Common problems

• Typo in the key: Watch out for mix-ups such as 'Q' and '0' or 'B' and '8'. Ideally, copy the key directly from the email.
• Installation does not start or fails: Usually an older Office version or a Microsoft 365 trial is still installed. Remove it as described in step 1 and restart your PC.
• Online activation fails: Check your internet connection and the date and time in Windows. If the error persists, use phone activation via the automated system.
• "Unlicensed Product" message: Run the activation again under File > Account and check that Office 2016 Professional Plus is actually installed. The key only works with this edition.
