On 13 July 2026, the code-signing certificate for Office 2019 for Mac expires. After that, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook will still open your files, but you won't be able to use them to edit or save. Here you'll read what's behind it – and how you can carry on working without a subscription.

What the code-signing certificate actually is
Every Mac app is digitally signed. This signature comes from a code-signing certificate and confirms to macOS that the software is genuine and unaltered.
Such certificates have a fixed expiry date. For Office 2019 for Mac, this date is 13 July 2026.
Microsoft is not renewing the certificate for this version. Office 2019 already left mainstream support on 10 October 2023.
Why the expiry leads to read-only
Once the certificate has expired, the signature is no longer considered valid. Office responds to this with a restricted mode.
- The apps still launch – so "won't start" doesn't apply.
- You can open, read and print files.
- Editing and saving are blocked.
- A non-updated Office 2021 for Mac is also affected. An updated 2021 from version 16.83 onwards is safe for now.
Why renewing or reinstalling doesn't help
The certificate is built firmly into the Office 2019 version – you can't renew it yourself. The expired signature is hard-wired into the 2019 build, and for Office 2019 there is no Microsoft update path that replaces it.
A fresh installation doesn't help either: the setup contains the same expiring certificate. After 13 July 2026, you end up back in read-only mode.
The clean solution is a current version with a valid signature – Microsoft Office 2024 for Mac.
