Office Mac Licence Expired: What's Really Behind It

When your Office Mac licence appears to have expired, it's worth taking a quick look at the cause, because in most cases the licence isn't the problem. A perpetual licence (one-time purchase) has no expiry date and doesn't lapse. When Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook on the Mac suddenly cause trouble, two quite different situations are almost always behind it, and they're easily confused. Perpetual licence vs. subscription: why a licence often doesn't expire at all

The term "expired" is often misleading on the Mac. An Office perpetual licence (for example Office 2019, 2021 or 2024 as a one-time purchase) has no expiry date. It belongs to you permanently and doesn't lapse on its own. If Office nevertheless stops working properly, that's not down to an expiring licence but to one of two clearly distinguishable causes.

• Microsoft 365 subscription: here you pay on an ongoing basis. When the payment ends, the editing mode ends. This is intended and affects only subscriptions.
• Perpetual licence / one-time purchase: doesn't expire. Problems here arise from a technical detail, not from the licence itself.
• Risk of confusion: many people take a read-only message for an expired licence, even though the licence remains valid.

Case A: your Microsoft 365 subscription has lapsed

If you use Office via a Microsoft 365 subscription and the payment ends or is cancelled, the apps switch to a restricted mode. Your files remain intact, but editing and saving are blocked until the subscription is active again. This is not a fault but the normal behaviour of a subscription model.

You have two routes: reactivate the subscription and keep paying monthly or yearly, or switch to a one-time purchase. If you no longer want any ongoing costs and are happy with your usual Office set-up, switching to a perpetual licence is often the calmer solution.

Case B: Office 2019/2021 becomes read-only from 13 July 2026

The second case concerns older perpetual licences. On 13 July 2026, the code-signing certificate used to sign Office 2019 for Mac expires. It will not be extended. A non-updated Office 2021 for Mac is also affected. An updated Office 2021 from version 16.83 onwards stays safe.

Important for context: the apps still launch. However, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook can then only be used for opening, viewing and printing. Editing and saving are then no longer possible. Here too it isn't the licence that has expired, but the technical certificate. The licence itself remains formally valid, but in everyday use is barely usable any more.

The clean solution: Office 2024 as a perpetual licence

If you want to work without a subscription permanently and not face another deadline again, Office 2024 Standard for Mac is the direct route.
