Office 2019 Mac Is Expiring: Read-Only From 13 July 2026

Office 2019 Mac is expiring: on 13 July 2026, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on your Mac switch into read-only mode. The apps still launch and you can open, view and print documents – but editing and saving will no longer be possible. Anyone who works actively in these programs should plan the switch in good time.

What exactly happens on 13/07/2026

Office 2019 for Mac does not simply stop working – it becomes read-only. Specifically, from 13 July 2026 this means:

• Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook can still be opened.
• You can view and print existing files.
• Editing and saving are locked.

So it is not a case of "Office won't start", but a pure read-only mode. Your existing documents are preserved and remain format-compatible; you can still access their content.

Why Microsoft is not renewing the certificate

Office 2019 for Mac uses a code-signing certificate that expires on 13 July 2026. Microsoft is not renewing this certificate. Without a valid signature, the apps no longer allow write operations – which is what produces read-only mode.

Office 2019 also left mainstream support back on 10 October 2023. There have been no new features or regular updates since then; the end of editing is the next stage.

Are you affected?

It is not only Office 2019 that is affected. Before the cut-off date, check which version is running on your Mac:

You will find your version in an open Office app at the top of the menu under "Word" (or Excel or PowerPoint) and then "About", or via "Check for Updates". If the displayed version number is 16.83 or higher, your Office 2021 is not affected for now; a lower number or an Office identified as 2019 is affected.

Your options – why Office 2024

You have several ways to keep working. For most pure Office users with no need for a subscription, the one-time purchase is the right path.

In everyday terms, "read-only" means: you can no longer create and save a new file, you cannot save changes or comments, and you cannot export an edited document as a PDF or in another format. Merely viewing and printing remains possible – but that is not enough for active work.

Microsoft Office 2024 Standard for Mac is a perpetual licence with no subscription. You pay once and use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook with no recurring costs. In Word you write and format text, in Excel you calculate with tables and formulas, in PowerPoint you build presentations and with Outlook you manage emails and appointments – each with the familiar range of features. The licence has no expiry date; security updates come within the Microsoft support period.

Office 2024 runs on Apple Silicon (M1 through M4) and on Intel Macs. You continue to open and edit your existing .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files exactly as before – there is no need to switch to a new file format. You receive Office 2024 as a download in the form of a Microsoft-signed setup file and can install it right away.

That way your work stays saveable without interruption, even beyond 13 July 2026.
