Full version versus upgrade key
A Windows 11 Pro full version allows you to install Windows 11 Pro on a device that is not yet running any Windows, such as a newly built PC or after a complete hard drive reset. You install Windows from scratch and activate it with the key.
An upgrade key, on the other hand, requires an already running Windows, such as Windows 11 Home or Windows 10, and unlocks the Pro tier. For most buyers who already have a working Windows, the upgrade route is more convenient. The full version is the right choice for a true clean installation.
When you need a full version
- Newly built PC. On a device without pre-installed Windows, the full version is the way to go.
- Complete clean installation. When you wipe the hard drive and set Windows up from scratch.
- Switching from another operating system. When moving from a non-Windows system, you need the full version.
- Existing Windows. Anyone who already uses Windows and only wants Pro features does not need a full-version key, but an upgrade.
