When Windows 11 Home is enough
- Standard PC use. Office, web, email, streaming, games. All home-use scenarios are covered by Home.
- No business integration needed. If you don't need Active Directory, Group Policy or a Remote Desktop Server, Home is enough.
- No BitLocker drive encryption needed. If your data doesn't have to be fully encrypted for regulatory reasons, Home is enough.
- Microsoft account acceptable. Windows 11 Home requires a Microsoft account for the initial installation; a local account is not possible (unlike with Pro).
When you should switch to the Pro edition
A single Pro feature is usually enough to justify the extra cost: BitLocker (drive encryption), Hyper-V (virtualisation), Remote Desktop Server (connecting to the PC from outside), Active Directory Domain Join (corporate network integration), or the Group Policy Editor.
A practical rule of thumb: freelancers and small business owners usually end up with Pro, while home users with no special requirements usually end up with Home.
