What Microsoft Project does
Microsoft Project supports the planning and control of projects: tasks are arranged into schedules, dependencies are mapped, milestones are set and resources are assigned. Classic views such as the Gantt chart are part of the software's core.
Project is a standalone program and not part of the Office suites. Project is available as a perpetual license for one device. As with Office, the one-time purchase means permanent use with no recurring costs. For regular project work, this is cheaper than a subscription over the years.
The two Project editions
- Project Standard. Covers project planning for individual project managers: schedules, tasks, Gantt charts.
- Project Professional. Additionally provides extended resource management and features for collaborating on projects.
- Edition to suit your needs. Anyone planning and controlling projects on their own will be fine with Project Standard. Professional is worthwhile for intensive resource and team work.
- Platform. Project is available for Windows; when buying, make sure to choose the right version.
