Windows Server 2019 is above all the sensible choice when an existing environment is to be extended. If you already run several servers on 2019, adding another licence of the same version keeps administration consistent and avoids compatibility edge cases.
Even when a specific industry application explicitly requires Windows Server 2019, the version is the right decision. For a complete rebuild without such ties, however, a more recent version is the more future-proof investment.
What to watch out for with Windows Server 2019
- Check the support lifecycle. Windows Server 2019 is in a later phase of its lifecycle. Before buying, it is worth looking at the remaining support period.
- Consistency of the environment. In environments that have grown with several 2019 servers, consistent administration argues for the same version.
- Application requirements. If software explicitly requires Windows Server 2019, the version is a given.
- Licensing as with current versions. 2019 too is licensed on a core basis for Standard and Datacenter, with CALs for the accesses.
