When the upgrade is worth it
Upgrading from Home to Pro is worth it as soon as you have a concrete need for a Pro feature. The most common trigger among private users is BitLocker, the disk encryption, especially on laptops. Further reasons are Hyper-V for virtualisation, Remote Desktop Server for access from outside or connecting to a company network.
What is not a reason for the upgrade is the mere feeling that Pro is better. Anyone who uses none of the Pro features gains no added value from Pro. The honest rule of thumb: only upgrade if you can name a concrete feature that you need.
How the upgrade works
- Obtain a Pro upgrade key. Buy a Windows 11 Pro key, delivered by email.
- Change the product key. In the settings under System and Activation, change the product key to the Pro key.
- Wait for activation. Windows unlocks the Pro features, which takes only a few minutes.
- No reinstallation. Files, programs and settings are fully preserved.
